poster DS 2012

Diddley Squat has been working with different drummers recently, trying for that perfect fit, which is why you're seeing a "?" over the drummer's face...soon to be resolved!

Thank you Winnsboro for the warm New Year's welcome to, not only Diddley Squat, but Lindsey Gail as well!!  For those of you who didn't know Diddley Squat until last night's performance---NOW YOU KNOW!!  HA!  And, for those of you who never had the good fortune of hearing Lindsey Gail's vocals live & in-person, you now know that, too!  There was a little something for everyone that enjoys the genre of the blues, and this entire night was a great way to start the Crossroads Music Company's 2012 concert series...we truly appreciate your support.

Ray Wylie Hubbard

Ray Wylie Hubbard Back to Back at Crossroads! - Back to Back shows on the 16th & 17th!

Price: $25 adv/$30 rsvd

Ray Wylie Hubbard returns to Winnsboro, Texas!!   Back to Back shows, Friday & Saturday night,

December 16th & 17th, so everyone that wants to catch the show should be able to!!

RWH

What the critics are saying about the Ray Wylie Hubbard’s
A. ENLIGHTENMENT B. ENDARKENMENT (HINT: THERE IS NO C)....
“Think of it as mystical biker country. There’s a definite cosmic thrust to the plunked tin
guitar notes, the jingle-jangle tambourine, tattooed rhythms and a red-dust harmonica wheezing
a spectral recap of the mostly blues, kinda country melodies.”
-American Songwriter
“Ray Wylie Hubbard was an outlaw before the term was coined and he continues to go
his own solitary way on A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C).”
-Crawdaddy
“On first listen, his first new album in four years may not sound like a radical departure
from his previous four records, but A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C) is
anything but business as usual.”
-Lone Star Music
“Enlightenment is an entire back-to-basics movement rolled into 12 tracks that uncoil like
a rattlesnake disturbed in its sleep.”
-Houston Press
“He's got a deep, gravelly voice that certainly wouldn't be suited to much material. But
it's perfect for his dark tales and invocations of, for example, a "Drunken Poet's Dream," which
is filled with alcohol and alluring women and a battle with wasps and their hellfire stings.”
-Journal Star
“Hubbard seems to have chosen endarkenment for the moment, but his walk on the dark
side is delivered in a potent package of bluesy guitars, crashing cymbals and, adding an
ominous tone of how serious this all is, some church choir vocals and hand claps.”
-Aspen Times
“That odd album title and the song it comes from, neatly encapsulate the unique hoodoo
of Ray Wylie Hubbard. The grizzled Texas troubadour can embrace all kinds of heady concepts
(and headless ones, too - see the album cover), but he brings it all down to a primal musical
level, and not without dashes of devilish humor.”
-Philadelphia Inquirer
“Besides having possibly the oddest title of the year, the new record is a tight collection
of sparsely produced gems. The album possesses serious doses of Gothic country (“Down
Home Country Blues”), dirty blues (“Wasp’s Nest”) and soul-scorching gospel (“Whoop &
Holler”).”
-Texas Week
“ Hubbard exists as a troubadour of the highest order who has always tested musical
boundaries.”
-Swampland

RWH poster Dec 2011

Winnsboro, Texas is blessed in many ways!  There is a certain positive energy you feel when you're in town, and it appears to be contagious.  Winnsboro holds the honor of being designated as the ONLY Rural Cultural Arts District in the State of Texas, which is pretty cool!  Live music is ALIVE & WELL in East Texas, and that certainly holds true for Winnsboro.  Crossroads Music Company was privileged to host back to back performances by Texas' own Ray Wylie Hubbard.  Remember that "positive energy" I mentioned a few sentences ago?  Well, Ray left some more of that behind when he departed today.

Friday night's performance was to an intimate and smaller crowd than what Ray faced on Saturday night.  In a way that only Ray Wylie Hubbard can deliver, he tailored each performance to the group of supportive fans he faced---very impressive!  Sharing the stage was Ray's percussionist, Rick Richards, who kept the pace where it needed to be, except when the crowd would take the challenge of  trying to sing in time and in tune!  lol   Ray mentioned that maybe some of his supporters invest in metronomes to help keep time [all in good humor!]  Saturday's crowd was found to be a bit more rowdy. Hard-core fans sang along with the classics, whoopin & hollerin in-between!  Good clean fun and powerful singer/songwriting, Ray Wylie-style!!  Ray's CD, "A. Enlightenment; B. Endarkenment [(Hint: There is no C)" offers wild cover art, featuring a decapitated RWH, and we got to hear some of the tunes Friday & Saturday nights...I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but plan to soon, along with Dustin Welch's!

Dustin Welch opened for Ray, and left a mark of his own!  The son of singer/songwriter great Kevin Welch [google him to see his resume'], Dustin brought plenty of his OWN talent to the table, talking with the crowd, and performing songs off his CD, "Whisky Priest."

More to come on Ray, but, for now, believe me when I say that Winnsboro is a little richer, with some additional positive energy,  having hosted this great Texas Music icon!  So, to Dustin, Ray, Rick, and Ray's touring manager Kayla, thank you so very much for making Winnsboro, Texas a stop along the way! ~Gus

Hearne and Adler

Since this is traditionally held on Thanksgiving weekend, we will continue to follow that tradition.  However, this year, we're discussing the possibility of a "Taste of Winnsboro" spread, offered-up by the local restaurant owners that may want to share what they're all about.  Since folks may already be growing tired of Turkey left-overs by Thanksgiving Saturday night, this might work out well!  Your feedback on this is certainly welcome...

Kate with LindyWarren Jackson HearneLindy & Jonathan Hearne

Lynn Adler & Lindy Hearne will head-up the evenings performance, adding family members & friends along the way.  This makes for magical moments, so don't miss the live show!  Rumor has it that Warren Jackson Hearne, Jonathan Hearne, and Kate Hearne will ALL be on hand to enhance the show, along with some local talent of the family's choosing...   ~Gus

6th Anniversary show

I don't believe it gets much better than this, unless, of course, Kate had been able to attend this momentous occasion---for sure!  Amen.  Nothing else can be said, but I'm gonna blog about it anyway!

Here's a moment onstage, shared by Lindy Hearne, with his two sons Warren & Jonathan!

Dave Walser

Dave Walser, with Cellist Brian Magnus...

Dave & Brian

Euless News, written after Dave's last show:

James Taylor once referred to the 60's in a tongue-in cheek manner as "The Great Folk Scare." Everyone who had a guitar was a singer/songwriter. Some were pretty good at it and became famous.

As a part of the ARTSNET Masterworks Series, Dave Walser will be performing songs from his current album in progress called Of Beatles, Dylan and the Great Folk Scare. The songs are classic folk songs from Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan, James Taylor and others.

Walser remarked, "They were songs of great poetry and messages of change in a unique era of peace and love. It was a time of change and moving forward with civil rights. And it was a time that I grew up in. I love those old songs and will be bringing my own nostalgic influences to a show I look forward to."

Dave has also done some songwriting and will be performing some heartfelt songs of his own as well. Accompanying Dave Is the exceptional cellist Brian Magnus.  Brian is an accomplished cellist who imparts his skills and personality into the songs.  Together they create a sum that is greater than the whole.   The earthy acoustic sounds of Dave's vocal with guitar and cello are a perfect match.

Reviews

"If I had a mop top I'd be shakin' it!" -Ralph McLean, BBC Radio Ulster

"Beatlegras isn't just for Beatles fans, but for those of us who love great musicianship played out as one of the sweetest sounds imagineable.
A sound that remains constantly in my CD player"
-Gary Cogill, Movie Critic, WFAA

"With such a varied musical background, their approach initially sounds interesting and their own songs fit in very well, since they are very Harrison- or Lennon-like. The beautiful vocals may remind you of Gerry Rafferty's and are a highly appreciated element of their acoustic performance...to be continued, I hope."

-Tom Weel, Beatles Unlimited, The Netherlands

"There are so many Beatles cover bands around that we were starting to become bored with mundane versions of Back in the U.S.S.R. Until we heard Beatlegras do that song on National Public Radio a few weeks ago. Their fast-picking version actually had us singing along, which no other group, aside from the Fab Four themselves, have managed to do....They'll have you tripping like you just discovered Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
-Mark Lowry, Fort Worth Star Telegram

"...you might want to call Beatlegras the Fab Three...they have a sense of humor, too!"
-Mario Tarradel, Dallas Morning News

When a cover band approaches the original material with a style and sensibility all its own, they can establish themselves as artists in their own right, building on existing material to create something entirely fresh and unexpected. That's exactly the effect that fans of the Dallas trio rave about....

Druha Trava is Czech for "Second Grass" but I'm here to tell you that they are "FIRST" IN GRASS!!--Bluegrass, that is...And it was FIRST CLASS GRASS, TOO!!  According to the men in the band, three months ago in the Czech Republic, their music climbed to the top of the chart!!  And, in the Czech Republic, THERE IS ONLY ONE CHART!!  Rock, Bluegrass, folk--all genres on the SAME chart, so that is significant!!  Hopefully, that spells a higher volume of CD sales!  The last two of which were recorded right here in the States--Nashville, TN.  I just got my hands on their latest, "Shuttle to Bethlehem," and look forward to listening!  Great originals, and great covers of Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, etc...They've been here for about 6 weeks already, with a couple more to go!  This is there 20th Anniversary American Tour, and Winnsboro is very fortunate to have such great talent passing through!  ~Gus

Tiffany Christopher rocked the house!!!  We took a chance booking her for a Friday night with so much else going on, but thank God we took that chance.  It was the only night we could get Tiffany, as the band passed from Fayetteville, Arkansas, making their way to Austin for a wedding gig.  Despite all the competition for support, we still managed to have some support for the show.  We fell in LOVE!  Fantastic stage presence and songwriting, not to mention guitar-playing and all around cuteness!  Bass-player Miles, and Teddy on guitar, rounded out the trio, as they performed a combination of originals and cover tunes.

Opening for Tiffany was 16 year old Tyler Lenius, a rising star in his own right, showing off his Texas-grown songwriting skills.  Tyler certainly has a bright future, with his unique sound and guitar playing style--"old spirit" in a young body!

Ann Armstrong & Steve Hughes

Well, it's 11:11 PM, the show is over, but the World Series game is still going strong--16 to 8, St. Louis over Texas, game three.  Pujols just hit his third home run of the game to tie Reggie Jackson's record from the 70s, but broke a few other records while he was at it!  NOW you know where all the East Texans were that would normally have been sitting in the Crossroads Music Company & Listening Room seats, listening and watching Ann Armstrong and Steve Hughes entertain them with great guitar-work, slide-work, harmonica, flute, original songs & classic blues cover tunes.  Sadly, rather than utilize today's technology, and recording the event to watch after the concert, the majority of folks positioned themselves in front of TV sets to watch the game.  For the record, I was able to catch the end of the game, LIVE, while taking in the entire performance--and it was a great performance!!

Those of you that did not make the concert, well, you were truly missed!   ~Gus

200 Market Street
Winnsboro Texas 75494
USA 903-342-1854
Price: $15 adv/$18 door/$20 rsvd seatin

Brian Burns has, for many years, been regarded as one of Texas’ top performing songwriters, his work having been covered by a number of legendary artists. But in recent years Brian has emerged as one of his state's most powerful and engaging performers. His songs explore both the poignant and the humorous sides of humanity, drawing out the things we’ve all felt and wish we could have said. The warmth, wit, and eclecticism of his performances captivate audiences night after night.

Brian is a stellar singer/songwriter and guitarist, yet a decidedly down-to-earth performer.  Remaining friendly and accessible to supporters, fans, and radio, he performs an average of 300 shows a year including solo performances and songwriter shows with some of the nation's top  artists.  In an industry that has always followed formulas, business models, and demographics, Brian Burns has created his own music industry, on his own terms, based upon honesty and steadfast commitment to his work and the people who enjoy it.  Just one man and his guitar - drawing clarity out of the white noise of modern Texan and American culture, then turning it into a good time to be had by all - ages 9 to 90.

Well, I gotta tell ya, Brian Burns usually draws a bigger crowd when he comes out to East Texas for a performance...Let's face it, he's an excellent Americana/Country Texas singer/songwriter with quite a few hits under his belt, and over 100 songs recorded over the years--good songs.  Those in attendance were enthusiastic enough for a crowd twice their size, and Brian performed two sets that included songs off the CD due to hit the pavement in October!  To everyone that missed tonight's performance, you missed a local rising star by the name of Cole Risner--the opening warm-up performer.  Cole has been busy going to school in Commerce, while still finding time to write some pretty tasty songs of his own...we can expect a CD release from Cole in the early part of next year.

Those of you that would like to see Brian Burns return, respond to this blog, and we'll work it out for next year some time.   ~~Gus Gustafson

Rhett

Rhett Butler is the Obsessive-Compulsive Guitarist.  In 1987 he received his first guitar for Christmas.  As his primary antidote against the pain and fear that he felt through his brother's bouts with cancer, Rhett retreated into the instrument.  What blossomed was a fiery work ethic that is reflected in his mastery of multiple styles and his passionate performances.

Rhett was admitted to the prestigious jazz program at the University of North Texas in 1993. Early on, Rhett developed a trademark hammer-on style that allows him to play two guitars at once by fingering each of their fret boards, coaxing filigreed harmonies and shimmering melodies without needing to strum.

Though Rhett is most well known for playing two guitars at once, don't make the mistake of trying to classify him as a gimmick performer or a one trick pony.  He regularly features five or six different guitars during his performances.

Rhett has performed with Tommy Emmanuel, Al DiMeola, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Monte Montgomery, Larry Corryell, Tony Trischka, The California Guitar Trio, Carl Palmer, Andy Timmons and many other legends of instrumental music. He is among the next generation of Texas guitar heroes.

Rhett Butler

For those that need a refresher on who Rhett Butler is, I started this blog with his website--take a gander if you need to familiarize yourself with this mega-talent.  Truly a gifted musician and guitar player, Rhett surprised the crowd Saturday night, leading off the performance with a new addition to his show--the ukulele.  As he put it, with only four strings, "you have to be more selective with the notes you choose."  Well, he certainly was, throwing some John Lennon, and Paul Simon at the appreciative gathering.  Rhett & his bride have just recently had a baby boy, and he plans to do an entire CD of lullabies that will put that ukulele to the test.

Although Rhett lost his brother Ashley to cancer in May of 2010, he is still very much involved in cancer research, with much of the proceeds from his CD sales going in that direction.  Something about the evening's performance made for a magical evening.  When he'd let an A-440 ring out, the Art Center answered back with the sounds of crickets in the woodwork, almost as a reminder of back when Rhett used to sell them to Dallas pet stores in the 1990s.  But that didn't stop him from telling some great stories and performing mind boggling riffs on two guitars at once!

Crossroads plans to not wait as long to have Rhett back to Winnsboro, Texas, so stay tuned to the calendar, and thanks to all of you that participate in keeping the LIVE music ALIVE in East Texas!

With Autumn approaching, it seemed appropriate to start up the Singer/Songwriter nights at Crossroads...this was kind of a spur-of-the-moment decision, as a way to welcome Lindy Hearne & Lynn Adler back into town from this last 2-month leg of their tour.  A pretty fair turnout, considering the last-minute arrangements.  Being the 3rd Friday Arts Weekend in Winnsboro, there was quite a bit going on, with live music playing at three different locations!  Folks were walking the streets, checking out all that Winnsboro had to offer--pretty awesome stuff!

Ovid Stevens slidin'

It was quite obvious tonight that Ovid Stevens has touched the hearts and minds of many over the years, with his guitar-playing talent and concert showmanship.  Crossroads Music Company & Listening Room was honored to be the first stop of what will undoubtedly be an Autumn tour that should lead to many States across this U.S. of A.  Although there were a few technical bubbles to smooth over, Ovid had brought a truckload of equipment that included an extensive light show and sound-effects that would be the envy of much larger venues.  Steve Redfearn joined Ovid onstage, and took care of keyboards, percussion, some of the sound effects, and some tasty harmonica, too!

What was also super-cool was the fact that Ovid's latest CD is fresh off the presses---"Love the Night Away!"  In fact, I believe the artwork was finished up earlier in the week...that's cutting things a bit close, but how special to have something new to share with his fans---some of whom have been watching him evolve as a guitarist for decades, while compiling quite the resume' along the way.  Ovid has played with Seals & Crofts, England Dan & John Ford Coley, just to name two of many...the list is too long, so I'll just add his website to this blog instead, and let you pay him a visit there... www.ovidstevens.com

It felt like old-home night at Crossroads, with a house full of Ovid-supporters, including family members and fellow musicians involved in current projects or from Ovid's past.  Just to name a couple:  Bubba Keith slipped onto the stage, replacing Ovid's son Lennon as guitar-tech, and surprised the heck outta Stevens!  If any of you reading this blog remember the James Gang from the 70's, you'll be aware of Bubba's presence in that band after Joe Walsh's departure.  Mr. Ketih stayed on stage and sang a little, spicing up the show even more!  Then there was Steven Holbrook, the very talented multi-instrument musician [including vocals], sharing stories and visiting with the many friends that were there for the show.  Rhandy Simmons, with another extensive musical resume, who mastered Ovid's current tunes for the new CD at Siesta Ranch Studio, was also in the house.  Kelly Barber was another of Ovid's guests, and currently owner/operator of Action Sound down in Hawkins.

Was Ovid's break-out performance a success, you ask?  I believe the answer to that question is a high-volume YES!!  ~Gus

Matthew Davidson is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist. He got his first toy guitar at the age of 3, and he hasn't stopped playing since! He started taking weekly lessons on an acoustic guitar in the second grade and won his first electric guitar in the 2007 James Burton Guitar Showdown.  He was one of eight student guitarists selected to play with Kenny Wayne Shepherd at his 2009 Artbreak Concert. He has played at the B.B. King Museum in Indianola, MS and the Delta Blues Fest in Greenville, MS, where in addition to his own set, he sat in with Honeyboy Edwards for a few songs. Matthew played at the Cat Head Delta Blues store and the famous Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, MS during the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival. Matthew performed in the Youth Showcase at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and while there jammed at the B. B. King Blues Club. Matthew has had the honor of sharing the stage with Bugs Henderson, Buddy Flett, Joe Osborn, Maggie Warwick, and Kenny Bill Stinson.

Matthew's musical taste was largely acquired from listening to his dad's CD collection of music by The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, and Chuck Berry.

The Matthew Davidson Band, including Greg Clifford on drums and Bruce Flett on bass/vocals, made their debut on June 25, 2010 at the Madison Park El Chico and they are THE new Sensation in Shreveport and the surrounding area. The band played at the Red River Dragonboat Festival and they were a hit on opening day of the 2010 Red River Revel! They played at the Run for the Nuns biker rally at Harrah's Louisiana Downs, the State Fair of Louisiana, the Monster Nation Pit Party at CenturyTel Center, the World of Wheels Auto Show at the Shreveport Convention Center, the Minden Mardi Gras Festival and the Krewe of Centaur Parade. They were honored to be selected as the Grand Marshals of the Krewe of Aesclepius Mardi Gras Parade. The Matthew Davidson Band rocked the Dallas House of Blues and headlined the Mississippi Blues Marathon in Jackson, MS. They performed at the re-opening of the Stoner Avenue Skate Plaza, which was filmed by MTV. They will be performing at the 2011 King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR on Sat., Oct. 8th!

Gus Gustafson & Alex Orelchikov will warm up the crowd,

Well, I was a little apprehensive about ten days prior to the performance, since only 8 reservations had come into Crossroads!

Kidd Kraddick's Rock Camp all last week may have helped, since Matthew was the selected guitarist this year---a huge honor!  By the time Saturday rolled around, the phone continued to ring, and by 8 PM, things filled up nicely in support of  the Matthew Davidson Band.  http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fk945.com%2Fmatthew-davidson-kidd-kraddick-rock-camp-guitarist-wednesday-report%2F&rct=j&q=Kidd%20Kraddick%20with%20matthew%20davidson&ei=3hk3Tq-PD8LagQe95fmYDQ&usg=AFQjCNGgMfN-4upPQ2TnjDW5r_QujOdy4g&sig2=j24JBbyK3SKqio1kIpn6KQ&cad=rja

It was really great having Slightly Tilted back at Crossroads! This show was scheduled for a late start, mainly because I couldn't predict what might be going on for the weekend of July 4th, with all the Independence Day celebrations that would be happening all around the area, including fireworks displays.  Regardless, we lost some supporters, but gained others.

As an extra added attraction, Rafael Espinoza was the opening act.  Rafael was accepted at the Berklee School of Music earlier in the year, and is taking the Summer to prepare.  He's also playing a lot of guitar--alone and with his blues band--so it was a nice addition having him warm up the crowd.  Rafael & his blues band will be performing at the annual Fireworks Event at Winnsboro City Park on July 4th, between 6 PM and the start of the fireworks.  This is a Chamber of Commerce annual event, so if you read this in time, go check it out.

Well, the big moment arrived--the presentation of the OMNI Award to Rhandy Simmons of the Slightly Tilted Band!  Excitement filled the air, and you could see how sincerely moved Rhandy was during his acceptance speech...it was the band's first nomination for the OMNI, and their first win!  I'll post a picture of it when it's made available.  After the room settled, the band didn't waste any time filling Crossroads with the sounds of 60s & 70s Classic Rock, along with some of their own originals.  East Texas is Blessed having all this homegrown talent right in its own back yard!  Thank you all for another great night of music at Crossroads Music Company & Listening Room!  ~Gus

In 2001 Jimmy released Texoma. The CD received some of the best press of his career. including reviews by the Associated Press,VH–1, Billboard and Playboy. The ballad “Never Is A Moment” from the album, a radio favorite, became his most requested song ever. That year when not playing his own musical dates, Jimmy toured with a Woody Guthrie tribute project he conceived entitled Ribbon Of Highway–Endless Skyway. The show features a rotating cast of notable musicians performing Woody’s songs interspersed with narrations from his many writings. He also appeared that year at the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. Jimmy serves on the Advisory Board for the festival, and has played it twelve straight years. He is always quick to acknowledge it as his favorite musical event.

In 2005 Jimmy signed with the indie label Red House Records, and released Blue Nightfall. This stunningly soulful album was LaFave’s first in 4 years, and once again received many favorable reviews. In April, Jimmy was then honored when one of his musical heroes Bruce Springsteen invited him on stage for a duet at his show at the Nokia Arena in Dallas. Also that month Jimmy was very grateful when Nora Guthrie allowed him to look through the unseen lyrics from the Woody Guthrie Archives. She helped Jimmy choose 19 songs for a future “Woody” CD project, where he will co–write music for the lyrics using his own style and interpretations.

In early 2007 Cimarron Manifesto was Jimmy’s second release on Red House Records where it spent several weeks as number one on the Americana music chart. Later that year, Jimmy along with recording engineer Fred Remmert and Dallas businessman Kelcy Warren established Music Road Records. The label’s first CD release was Ribbon Of Highway–Endless Skyway, a two disc set from the Woody Guthrie tribute tour. Music Road also owns and operates two Texas based recording facilities — Cedar Creek Recording in Austin and Cherokee Creek Recording in the Texas hill country.

In 2010 Music Road released "Favorite's" a CD compilation of sixteen of Jimmy’s most requested songs, and he is currently putting the finishing touches on a new release for Music Road due out Spring of 2011.

June ended on a high note at Crossroads Music Company & Listening Room [www.facebook.com/crossroads903], with a super performance from Jimmy LaFave and four of his favorite travelling musicians!  What an entertaining mix of originals, covers, and--of course--some of Jimmy's favorite Bob Dylan tunes[Dylan just turned 70 this year!!].  A sold-out crowd was on hand for the performance, currently held on the shared stage within the Winnsboro Center for the Arts building on Market Street--a venue that comfortably holds approximately 100 people.  www.winnsborocenterforthearts.com Those in attendance were appreciative and attentive as stories were told, songs were sung, and each of the performing artists were given their opportunity to shine.  Jimmy & the band took a break between sets to connect with the crowd, discuss the CDs, sign autographs and take some photographs.  When the final set was over, no one was ready to call it a night.  Jimmy came back onstage for an extended encore that put huge smiles on the faces of all his fans...this was truly a high point in Crossroads' 2011 concert series!

Louisiana Crossroads

Louisiana Crossroads - 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv/$18 door/$20 rsvd seatin

The Boys...and a Girl...Your Momma Warned You About!

Crossroads began in 2002, in Bossier City, Louisiana, when founding member, John Kavanaugh decided to follow his dream of bringing together talented musicians of differing backgrounds to form a powerful, cohesive show band. Tailor made for the local casino market as well as the many festivals and major events of the area, Crossroads regularly plays to crowds throughout the Ark-La-Tex region.

Crossroads is and always will be about the music. Whether it be the New Orleans style brass, hot Texas guitar, or the incredible four and five part harmony, each member brings the best of his own style into the mix, creating a veritable crossroads of rock, blues, jazz, swing, and soul that explodes into the audience with a powerful energy that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

http://crossroadsfans.net/bios/

Wow!!!  Louisiana Crossroads is a band that has taken it to the next level, without a doubt!  The addition of Marie Romano about 9 months ago is a big part of this evolution.  The band takes Classic Rock & Blues covers and make them their own, thanks to top-notch musicians perfecting their craft.  As you watch the six musicians interact on stage during their performance, it becomes commonplace to witness Tony trade instruments with John, or Marie switch from congas to tamborine to keyboards while belting out powerful vocals in-between Blinddog's tasty harmonica fills!  Not to mention Tony doubling up and performing a tune with TWO saxophones simultaneously!!  These are all displays of the versatility this band brings to the table, and all with precision that has the audience up dancing in the aisles!  The Hammer kept things solid and in-time, while Lightnin' Boy was shreddin' it up on lead guitar!!  If you chose some other way to spend your Friday night, my condolences!  ~Gus

WINNER Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competiton 2004
FINALIST Sisters Folk Festival Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest 2009 & 2010
FINALIST Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase 2007
FINALIST Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Showcase 2004
FINALIST Mountain Stage Newsong Festival Songwriter Competition 2004

Cary Cooper is a woman to watch. She is turning heads and opening hearts everywhere she goes. Cary has spent the last ten years rediscovering her passion, perfecting her craft and learning to tell the truth. The fruit of her labor is shamelessly clear on her 2009 release, DIRTY LITTLE SECRET.

In addition to being named a 2007 finalist at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase, Cary has also been an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, a finalist at the Mountain Stage Newsong Contest and a 2004 WINNER of the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition.

Cary loves to teach almost as much as she loves to write and perform, and has had many opportunities around the country to hone her teaching skills. She has served as one of the songwriting teachers for Young Writer's Workshop at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She has taught at Summersongs both in New York and California. She currently works with Paul Reisler helping conduct "Kid Pan Alley" workshops across the country as well as with the Dallas writer's organization, Writer's Garret where she is an artist in residence.

She makes her home in Dallas, TX with her husband and musical partner, Tom Prasada-Rao, her daughters, 14 year old Caroline and 10 year old Hannah Kate, and Thurman, an obnoxiously large and unusually lovable, Goldendoodle.

Well, it was another powerful night of music at the Crossroads Saturday night.  KMG – [Kevin Tinney, Mia Tallant, and Gus Gustafson] – were the local opening act, sharing cover-songs and one Kevin original with the comfortably FULL house!  They even included some three-part harmony, which was impressive during Peaceful Easy Feeling and Angel from Montgomery.

Cary Cooper & Tom Prasada-Rao took the stage, playing songs from their most recent CDs--Cary's "Dirtly Little Secret" and Tom's "Goodnight Regret"--and infusing entertaining stories of what inspired many of the songs they had written.  The night flew by, with what appeared to be a satisfied crowd exiting the Winnsboro Center for the Arts at the end of the performance.

Laws promo

Even though Wheatley, Ontario is the Southern-most point of Canadian soil, it's still a long drive to Texas.  Winnsboro usually comes out in force to enjoy John & Michele Law's wonderful harmonies and entertaining stories that set the stage for those beautifully constructed melodies, and those lyrics exposing many of life's lessons along the way.  Though the attendance was lacking, the performance was anything BUT!!!

As a bonus, Jason Dennie joined the duo for this leg of their tour, and spent the evening rippin' it up on the mandolin...rumor has it that mandolin isn't even his instrument of choice [John spoke of Jason's awesome guitar-playing abilities].  All that being said, the mandolin addition certainly worked.  John took care of the guitar duties, Michele was enjoying herself on acoustic bass [I believe this is also new, since she usually plays the electric bass], and Jason complimented the musical mix with great mandolin fills, harmonies, and great original material, too!

Winnsboro's own Shannon Monk, joined by Kurt Bittner, opened the show for the Laws.  Those present got a taste of Shannon's vocal prowess, more of which can be experienced when she & True Blue perform on the Crossroad stage on April 28th!  Crossroads' opening acts are gaining momentum, partially due to the new tradition implemented this year [passing the basket] to help the performers cover some costs associated with showing up for a half-hour moment in the spotlight.  Thanks to the generosity of Crossroads Music Company's supportive crowd, we're able to keep ticket prices at the exact same pricing level they were OVER FIVE YEARS AGO, while bringing in excellent openers that add so much to the shows!

Our resident photographers weren't out this time around, but some of the smaller cameras were attempting to fill in, so hopefully some moments were captured that can be shared...please check back on the Crossroads website and Facebook page for future uploads, and a heart-felt THANK YOU for all of you that help us keep top-quality live music ALIVE in East Texas & Winnsboro in particular!

The Laws have also put together their first music video; "Same Rain!"  Crossroads would like to share! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0lv46-1xMU&feature=player_embedded

Adler & Hearne - 7:30 PM

Texas
Price: $15 adv/$18 door/$20 rsvd seatin

"And it may not mean a thing to a head below the clouds, trying to make sense of things that dreamers dream about. But one thing is clear to me when the romance starts -- it may not seem too smart, but it matters to the heart." CD Title Lyric by Lindy Hearne

Kate Hearne will be joining Lynn & LIndy for the show, as their opening act, and then during the main event.  She may be bringing some friends from college, too, so check back!

Sing along at the end

Saturday night marked the start of Tour U.S.A. for Adler & Hearne, and the timing was perfect, allowing them to perform to friends and fans in their own home town prior to heading West for the first leg of a full calendar of scheduled house concerts and venues--West Coast first, however they're stopping in Denton for a show this week, where they're co-billed with Lindy's son Warren Hearne.

Daughter Kate brought a few friends with her from South Plains College, and performed at a couple spots in Winnsboro.  First, they did an unplugged show for the crowd at Art & Espresso, then followed that up as the opening act for the Adler & Hearne show at the Crossroads!  Lynn & Lindy also invited a handful of other special guests to perform on various songs throughout the night, adding even more variety to an already wonderfully put-together performance!  Guests included: Kate Hearne, her friends and fellow students Allie & twins Lori & Rachel; Debbie Porter, Gus Gustafson, Kevin Tinney, Shannon Monk, Nelson Privette, and I hope I've included everyone!

Talks are already underway for the 6th Anniversary celebration and performance, scheduled for some time around Thanksgiving....Stay tuned!!  ~Gus

Emily Elbert and the Boston Boys

Emily Elbert & the Boston Boys - 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv/$18 door/$20 rsvd seatin

Glamour magazine recently selected Emily as one of the “Top 10 College Women of 2010″.   The competition, in its 53rd year, features some of the US’ most impressive female students, and past winners include Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Diane Sawyer, and Martha Stewart.  This year’s winners just got back from the NYC awards ceremony...

www.emilyelbert.com/

Emily’s new album, “Proof”, is now available online at CDBaby and on iTunes. this July, she co-produced the project with Stephen Webber at Willowshade Studios, in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. The album features a cast of Boston’s brightest upcoming musicians – Berklee College of Music alumni hailing from India, Brazil, Japan, Israel, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Equally diverse is the wide array of sounds and influences, ranging from jazz, folk, pop, and rock to soul, country, Latin, and African music. At its core, however, “Proof” features Emily at her best, with strong melodies, straight-to-the-heart vocals, and intricate guitar work.

Raised in Texas on a musical diet of Antonio Carlos Jobim, James Taylor, and ’60s radio, Boston’s Emily Elbert fell in love with guitar when she was 15. Three years later, she released her first album of original music. Now at 22, Emily has played over 350 shows internationally, from Alaska to Memphis, Austin to New York City, and Scotland, Puerto Rico, Saint-Barthélemy and Peru. Glamour Magazine recently named her one of the “Top Ten College Women” of 2010, and her second album, Proof, was released in September.

Emily Elbert hasn't even hit her stride, but just keeps improving with every click of the calendar.  For this particular visit to her home state of Texas, she chose to tour with Eric Robertson and the Boston Boys, and WOW what a treat THAT was!!

The best word to describe the evening might be "versatility" because this mix of musicians were able to take the crowd in many different directions.  The youthful energy they all brought to the stage was infectious, and it was just plain FUN to be in the same room with all of them!

What you got was great connection with the crowd, with vocal harmonies from Eric & Emily, violin/electric mandolin/bass/percussion and all played with precision.  What genre you might ask from Emily Elbert these days?  Well, last night we got a nice blend of Jazzy/Scattin/bluezy/Bluegrassy/Folksie/R&B!

"One of the strongest guitar players in contemporary folk"

"The High Road Home"

OK, so the crowd was thin for a FULL MOON FRIDAY NIGHT, but those who attended really got a treat!  Nicholas Altobelli, "one of the finest traditional folksters in North Texas" [Quick--Dallas Morning News], kicked off the evening, and Jack Williams [who hadn't been to Winnsboro in a while] gave everyone a full night of stories and AWESOME song stylings!  Jack introduced his latest CD, "The High Road Home" by playing a few tracks ...a true seasoned professional, his smooth vocal delivery & exceptional guitar playing left the crowd smiling...then he challenged everyone to go home and get creative themselves, calling out the "inner songwriter" within us ALL!!  Thank you Jack, for injecting the small town of Winnsboro with song!  ~Gus

#4 Roots Music Report (Folk)

Sally Spring and Ted Lyons had a great sound, strong stage presence, and some excellent Americana songs to share.  Coming in from North Carolina for their annual Texas swing, Crossroads was fortunate to be one of the stops along the way!  Due to a handful of variables, the crowd was thin, but the music was strong and full of depth.

An added feature to the show was the opening act, Leanne Bryant!  Very flavorful, with a nice eclectic feel to her songwriting, Leanne showed off her singer/songwriting skills and unique style.  I'm certain we'll have her back in the future, and there's talk of her putting together her initial demo CD this year...Crossroads will stay tuned, and keep y'all posted...

Diddley Squat Blues Band

Diddley Squat Blues Band - 7:30 PM

Price: $20 rsvd seating

Diddley Squat performed to a sold-out crowd on January 29th to kick off the 2011 schedule of events.  They were able to further polish the 25 minute set they plan to enter into competition in Memphis this week during the International Blues Challenge February 2nd through the 5th.  If they bring the level of energy they displayed Saturday night to this competition, it's straight to the Saturday finals they'll go, and the GLOBAL recognition that would accompany it.   Please visit their website at www.diddleysquatblues.com for updates.

Following is a note from the band:

Well friends, Diddley Squat didn't make it to the IBC finals.  We heard we had one of the toughest lineups competing in our venue, which made us feel a tiny bit better, but we sure would've liked to advance.  The bands who were picked for the finals from our venue were San Francisco's Tip of the Top, Toronto's already famous Carlos del Junco & the Blues Mongrels, Ottawa's Al Wood & the Woodsmen, and Poland's Kajetan DrozdEVERYone was a class act, and deserving. To top it off, they were all very nice people, which makes us so proud of the blues world in general. There really isn't another branch of the music entertainment world that could be filled with friendlier folks- and no musician loves what they do any more than true blues artists.  We ARE in it for the love of the music- getting paid is the icing on the cake.  So although we didn't compete in the finals, the networking we experienced with the other artists, music industry reps, and above all, the FANS from all over the word, is a reward and a priceless treasure. We want to thank all our friends who supported our effort; we appreciate you so very much.

DT 2010

Druha Trava is a wonderfully individual band from the Czech Republic that is hard to describe. They perform new acoustic world music with bluegrass influences. You might hear them perform a bluegrass tune, Bob Dylan tune or one by another American or British artist, or one of their many originals. Though they basically use a typical bluegrass complement of instruments, you might see the banjo player also pick up a clarinet or Irish whistle. This along with the versatility of the dobro player helps create much of their unique sound.

The Bluegrass Association of the Czech Republic declared Druha Trava "Group of the Year" in both 2005 and 2006.

HERE'S A BLURB FROM RONNY'S WEB SITE:

"In Hollywood, they say it takes smart actors to play stupid characters, and nice guys to play nasty villains. Cox is the poster-boy for the latter point. He played slithery corporate snakes in "RoboCop" and "Total Recall;" but as a singer-songwriter, he is a study in easygoing amiability and unforced charisma. He charms crowds with self-teasing humor, tart progressive insight, and a lulling Southwestern folk sound. His repertoire is a smart mix of witty ditties, bluesy swing tunes, heart-on-sleeve romances, and real-life anthems ("It's a cry in the night/ It's a whispered prayer/ That gets you from here to there")." ~ Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Plus Jerry "Buck" French

If you are from Pittsburg you are likely to know Buck. Buck’s art is laughter. He can hardly contain his art sitting behind that Farm Bureau desk. He has sticky notes and half written dream waking antics shoved in every drawer. “I don’t even know why I thought this would be funny- but at 3am, everything is funny”, as he closes a drawer.

Jerry’s momma inspired him to be quick witted and funny (without a “potty mouth”). Buck announced football games for years and was always asked to MC the rotary and chamber banquets. Mr. Jerry “Buck” French has been interviewed by Joan Hallmark and was in a Super bowl Commercial.

Seeing how much people enjoyed his art drove him to record his newly released CD, “Kill the Hick” recorded at Siesta Ranch Studios. Buck can be seen on stage March 6th at Crossroads Music Company opening for Slightly Tilted. Buck is available to MC or host your event. He is great about breaking the ice to open the bid on Auction items! 903-856-3240.

Stacey and Mark

Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv / $18 door / $20 rsvd

Stacy and mark

Stacey and Mark have recorded 32 acoustic versions of songs performed over the last 16 years. It comes after receiving an overwhelmingly warm response to the acoustic version bonus CD of their 2003 duo release, “Never Gonna Let You Go”. Stacey and Mark: “We are thinking, maybe, it is what the audience wants and we aim to please. Folks come to the show; they ask if we have something that sounded like us that night. Let’s call it a souvenir .It seems we have become songwriters, live performers, then recording artists in that order.” While, no doubt, each still remains an individual solo artist with solo releases (such as the new 2008 release of Mark Stuart “Left of Nashville” and Stacey Earle “The Ride” due later 2009), it is through the respect of each others work and years of playing together they have created their sound. And, that sound allows each individual to shine through. Their stage plot is as basic as it gets. No tricks, no gadgets, just two vocals (workhorse SM58s), two XLRs (guitar lines). Mix vocals even (think Everly Brothers), set the board “flat”, mix Mark’s guitar slightly hotter then Stacey’s (so the base notes can be felt while leaving the bite of the lead licks in Mark’s hands). With that, the dynamics are controlled by the artists.

Long a fan of live music, Shannon Monk has recently stepped out to do a little singing herself. Her first three gigs with her jazz ensemble True Blue—consisting of George Gagliardi, Rick Murray, and Ben Scarborough—have been sell-outs, which she credits in large part to the outstanding musicians she has been blessed to work with.

In a recent interview, Shannon said, "Stepping onto the stage at Crossroads is a thrill indeed, given all the inspiration I have received from artists far and wide who have come to play on that stage, as well as from the encouragement of my dear friends Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne, who have led so many to explore their own musical gifts."

"Opening for Big Wide Grin is exciting, and the chance to work with Fred Howard and Rhandy Simmons of Slightly Tilted, well, that just spells fun."

Vocalist Shannon Monk, guitarist Fred Howard, and bassist Rhandy Simmons will open for Big Wide Grin on January 7, 2010 at Crossroads in Winnsboro.

DRUHA TRAVA

Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv / $18 door / 20 rsvd

Ann Armstrong

Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv / $18 door / $20 rsvd

"Ann Armstrong exhibits her powerful voice and unfailing grasp of basic blues sensibilities in fine form." "Armstrong's practiced ease on guitar disguises impeccable technique and her original songs - are sturdy vehicles for her emotionally charged vocal stylings."
· Pulse Magazine

"Armstrong's blazing blues guitar and sensitive ballardry make for real Texas folk blues."
· Ft. Worth Star Telegram

"Beyond the blues." "On stage, Dallas' Ann Armstrong is forceful when she pulls out her acoustic bottleneck slide guitar to play the blues. Ms. Armstrong's furious, down-and-dirty rendition of Robert Johnson's 'Come Into My Kitchen' - the highlight of her live set - is downright flammable. Ms Armstrong also shares some genuinely catchy pop hooks on original songs such as 'Stars Go Out" and "Think About the Rain" Why, at times backed by a ticklish flute and her own stellar acoustic guitar, dangerous Ann Armstrong comes across as sweet as sugar. Ms. Armstrong's live sets are so substantial - extra grit, extra grease, extra sassy slide guitar."

SLIGHTLY TILTED (Classic 60s & 70s Roots Rock)

Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: $15 adv / $18 door / $20 rsvd

One hot August night in 1977, a Dallas rock band packed up and loaded the van for the last time. Thirty years later they somehow ended up as neighbors in East Texas. Rhandy Simmons, Fred Howard and Tim Grugle went their own way on that day in 1977; now with the addition of Kent Gooding and Wes Hendrix, they are slightly grayer and play slightly quieter.

Kent Gooding is an accomplished vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and percussionist. Kent has played with many artists during his career including Gary Porterfield and Michael O’ Neal. He is currently busy recording a solo album at Siesta Ranch Recording Studio in upper Upshur County, and also performing with The Whisky River Road Show and Post Oak Savannah.

Wes Hendrix shares the vocals and is also a smooth operator of a six string. Wes brings a soulful and gritty style to the mix. He paid his dues working as a house musician in 1979 at The Steak Pit on Harry Hines in Dallas where he met songwriter David Patton and formed the David Patton band, from whom many lessons were learned. In 1981 Wes formed the country band Stallion and for 14 years toured with great success. In 1995 he toured with Sony
recording artist Ty Herndon. Wes now works freelance with artists such as Kacey Musgraves.

Fred Howard can rock with the best, as he did in Dallas bands Lodella and Pandora, but he also is an accomplished finger-style guitarist. With this diversity, Fred brings a refined element to the group. This is evident in his songwriting abilities and musical tastes that range from jazz-fusion to classical to blues. Fred is a session guitarist for Siesta Ranch Studio.

Being elected as a Buddy Magazine Texas Tornado in 1991 was one of the highlights of drummer Tim "Chopper" Grugle’s career. It started when his parents noticed he beat everything in their house with wooden spoons and sticks. Also a recording engineer and producer, he has played with, recorded or produced for most major and major independent labels, and acts such as Metallica, Chuck Berry, John Nitzinger, Raizin Cain, and Pantera. His band Bellicose was an icon in the Texas music scene, and their CD “Love On Ice” went to number one on many stations.

Bassist Rhandy Simmons started out with Fred and Tim back in the ‘70s and went on to play with numerous notables including Danny and Darius Brubeck (Dave’s sons) and Roomful of Blues. Rhandy won the Buddy Magazine Texas Tornado award in 1987, and was with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets when the band won the 1992 W.C. Handy award for Best Blues Band. After touring and recording with Mike Morgan and the Crawl, Rhandy established Siesta Ranch Recording Studio where he has recorded and produced dozens of CDs.

Here's a peek at just some of the songs from Slightly Tilted's ever-growing set of classic covers AND originals by members of the band. Rumor has it they've added some hot new (old) numbers to this awesome list of favorites:

1. Space Cowboy - Steve Miller
2. Mr. Tambourine Man - Dylan/Byrds
3. Six Days On the Road - Flying Burrito Brothers
4. Cross-Town Traffic - Jimi Hendrix
5. Feelin' Alright - Traffic
6. The Weight - The Band
7. Tupelo - Kent Gooding
8. Jam Groove - Fred Howard
9. Cinnamon Girl - Neal Young
10. Gypsy Queen - Carlos Santana

1. The Lost Highway - Hank Williams
2. Mood for a Day - Steve Howe / Yes
3. Hey Mr. Space Man - The Birds
4 .Hide Your Love Away -Beatles
5. Stuck in Lodi Again - Credence Clearwater Revival
6. Prime Time- Fred Howard
7. Shifting of the Blame- Kent Gooding
8. Poncho and Lefty- Townes Van Zandt
9. American Crawl - Fred Howard
10. Summer in the City - Lovin Spoonful

"Idgy Vaughn has only been in Austin for a few years but already her brand of confessional country has made her a recognizable figure in the Austin music scene. “Judy Wright’s voice is as sultry as a nights’ breeze in the French Quarter.” -Dan Gordon, ABC Radio

The GREAT INTERFERENCE aka The Ramseys

Crossroads Music Co. - Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: $5 Adult / $25 Family of 5+

The Great Interference is composed of seven members of the Ramsey family. The Ramseys moved from the suburbs of Dallas, TX to tiny Winnsboro, TX in 1997. The building of their three story farmhouse commenced and they set up house in a two room pole barn nearby, beginning the greatest adventure of their lives.

It was during the two and a half years spent beneath that tin roof that Samuel and Emma started writing songs together. Samuel took up his Dad's guitar and Emma scribbled her thoughts on any piece of paper she could find. They moved into the new house in January of 1999 and the journey into music continued. They kept writing songs. James built himself a drum-set with K'nex, tupperware, and a practice pad and hi-hat. Johanna began to sing.

Then Sam came into a guitar of his own. James got a real drum-set. They began to share their songs with the world around them. They had their first concert at a tiny Methodist Church. Over the next eight years Samuel started playing the piano and group added bass and electric guitars to the mix. Grace and Sarah Anne took piano and violin lessons. James picked up the cello. Johanna learned the bass guitar.

In 2007, their first CD, recorded at home, was finally released.

And the so music goes on... interfering with the atmosphere.

LATE-BREAKING NEWS: JERRY "BUCK" FRENCH once again will open for Slightly Tilted on this night. A Northeast Texas comedian you do NOT want to miss!!!!

THE PAULA NELSON BAND

Doors open at 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

Price: TBA

This will be STEPHEN MARSHALL's first official concert to host as NEW proprietor of all things "Crossroads!" Just LOOK at the June he's got lined up... this concert, then BEYOND THE PALE (6-13), SLIGHTLY TILTED (6-20), and ALBERT & GAGE (6-27)!

ABOUT PAULA NELSON...
When your dad is a founding father of outlaw country and a major musical legend, at some point, you realize resistance is futile: Even if you don’t seek a career in music, eventually, it’s gonna seek you. Like the Cash and Jennings kids, Paula Nelson picked up “Papa Bear” Willie’s way with a song early on — along with her aunt Bobbie’s skill on piano, which Paula started playing at age 7. Although her dad once advised her, “Remember to watch everything I do and do the exact opposite,” she drew influences from his Highwaymen pals and contemporaries such as Kris Kristofferson’s then-wife, Rita Coolidge, whose bluesy, supple vocal style provided one of Paula’s earliest templates as she found her own voice. Texas Monthly has called that voice “torchy,” and the Los Angeles. Times praised, “There’s no missing the unforced power of Paula’s singing.” Music writers will be searching for more superlatives upon listening to the new recording by the Paula Nelson Band, LUCKY 13, on Pedernales Records/Justice Records. Created at Ray Benson’s Bismeaux Studios in Austin, where Houston-born Paula was raised and still calls home, the album features 10 rootsy originals and three covers (including the timeless “Jackson” and “Angel from Montgomery”) in a sultry Southern rock/blues vein. 5-29-09 UPDATE: TICKETS FOR THIS SHOW almost SOLD OUT, but not quite. SEATING LIMITED!!! Capacity 150.

Willie Nelson says "Billy Joe Shaver may be the best songwriter alive today." Legions of fans agree that the Grammy-nominated, honky tonk hero is the real deal. Texas Country Music Hall of Famer Billy Joe Shaver and band will play in the intimate surrounds of the Crossroads stage on SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2009, in downtown Winnsboro.

Shaver's success began when Waylon Jennings recorded his songs on the 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes, which became a landmark of outlaw country music. His songs have since been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Patty Loveless, John Anderson, Tom T. Hall, the Allman Brothers, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Tex Ritter.

The following is from "Honky Tonk Hero: An Autobiography" by Billy Joe Shaver...

Introduction
I was not even born yet when my father first tried to kill me.

It was June and the evening light had started to fade, but it was still hotter than nine kinds of hell. We were outside of Corsicana, a little cotton town in northeast Texas, and I was in my mother's belly, two months from entering the world.

Buddy Shaver was convinced that my mother, Victory, was cheating on him. That was bullshit, and he probably knew it. But he'd been drinking. My father was half-French, half-Blackfoot Sioux, and one-hundred-percent mean. He drank a lot, and the booze didn't mix well with his Indian blood. You know there are some guys who are just born naturally strong, with big shoulders and a chiseled upper body even though they never work a lick at it? That was my father, and my mother didn't have a chance.

It's just a story I've heard, told by family members who don't enjoy the retelling. But I can see it as clearly as if I was there. They were standing next to a small stock tank with black, still water. It was the middle of nowhere, with no roads or houses in sight. Who knows what he told her to get her out there, or whether she knew what was coming when they stopped there? He held nothing back, yet his cold gray eyes showed no emotion as he beat her within an inch of her life. When she was down, he stomped her with his cowboy boots until she stopped struggling. Then he tossed her limp body into the water like a sack of potatoes. Years later, when I was a grown man, my momma couldn't stand to be around me when I wore cowboy boots—she never could forget what they did to her that night.

Momma laid there for hours until an old Mexican man showed up to water his cattle. Even though he knew my kinfolk pretty well, he didn't recognize her at first. He thought she was dead. But she spoke to him through the bruises and the blood, and he threw her over the back of his horse and carried her home.

The violence of that night set the stage for my childhood: It's the reason my father left, it's the reason my mother didn't want me, and it's the reason I went to live with my loving grandmother. In many ways, I think that night is the reason I write country songs.

When you get right down to it, country music is essentially the blues, and that night introduced me to the blues. In the years since then, they've never left me. I've lost parts of three fingers, broke my back, suffered a heart attack and a quadruple bypass, had a steel plate put in my neck and 136 stitches in my head, fought drugs and booze, spent the money I had, and buried my wife, son, and mother in the span of one year.

But I'm not here to complain or ask for pity. Life is hard for everybody, just in different ways. I'm not proud of my misfortune—I'm proud of my survival. For years, my family kept a bundle of life insurance on me because they were sure I would be the first to go. But as I write this, at sixty-four years of age, I'm still here and they are all gone.

The question is—why? That's something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Throughout my career as a songwriter, I've just written songs about me—the good and the bad, the funny and the sad. I've written songs about other people, but I don't sing other people's songs. They're just little poems about my life, and I've never pretended they were anything more. Despite all my ups and downs, I've never been to therapy or rehab or any of that stuff. The songs are my therapy.

But after my shows, people always come up to me and thank me for writing those songs. They tell me about their lives, and how a song of mine helped them through a tough patch or made them smile during a difficult time. Sometimes they say I inspired them—that if I can make it through my life, they can damn sure get through theirs. When we're done talking, I give them a hug and tell them I love them. I know exactly where they are coming from.

My point is, it's truly a miracle I survived that night by that stock tank, and I don't mean that the way most people say it—like it's a lucky break. I think God allowed me to live. He wanted me to tell my story.

Regarding this night's special opening guest ~ Warren Jackson Hearne was the first artist to perform a concert on the Crossroads stage back in November of '05. As we wrap up our time as Crossroads' proprietors, we thought it fitting to invite Warren (Lindy's first born son, by the way), to open for Billy Joe. THE MOONS OF JUPITER / The Outback Larrikins open

Crossroads Coffeehouse & Music Co. - Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

216 N. Main Street
Winnsboro TX 75494
USA 903.342.1854 or 888.342.1854
Price: 2 for price of one / see below!

Dear Friends... We're SOOOOO lucky to land this rare appearance of Sam Taylor & The Moons of Jupiter. We want very much to fill the room for them this night -- and because Friday night crowds are harder to come by -- we've reduced the ticket pricing for the May 15 concert! Please note... Advance General Admission (2 for $15), Door (2 for $18), and Reserved (2 for $20).

NOTE: Students 18 & under admitted for ONLY $5 for this very special concert. Please DO bring the young folks -- they'll be inspired tonight!!!

Take Sam Taylor, a proficient producer (King's X, Third Day) and one-time protÈgÈ of ZZ Top Svengali Bill Ham, lock him in a studio with a piano (guitar, organ, clarpinet, arptuba and voice too), and what do you get? Compositions for the Moons of Jupiter, Volume One: Callisto (LoCo). The mostly instrumental suite strives to be as high concept as Pink Floyd's The Wall, but it is a thoroughly pleasant piece that works as foreground or background music depending on your mood: ethereal in the tradition of vintage Nick Drake, predictable in the spirit of the Windham Hill catalog. Whatever it is, it begs the question of why it took Taylor so long to step from behind the curtain and into the spotlight and state the obvious: "Sam I am." Soundmates on the trio's debut CD "Calisto: Volume One," and for this rare Moons siting, are MAX DYER on cello and fretless bass, and RAY DILLARD on percussion.

Here's a favorite quote about this phenomenal musical menagerie: "Spans an intelligently freewheeling grab bag of styles, from classical chamber music and combo jazz to ragas black gospel, and music that showcases Taylor's penchant for writing strong cinematic themes." Rick Clark ~ BILLBOARD MAGAZINE

Opening for Sam and the Moons this night is a quirky band we enlisted from a recent Crossroads Open Mic (Friday, April 17)! They're a fun combination of rural East Texas musicians and true Aussie gents who also are true musicians. We like their spirit and their live sound. Learn more at www.sonicbids.com/theoutbacklarrikins. And remember, to hear The Moons' tunes, just click on their name above!

From down under to the Moons of Jupiter. Should be a most "aussome" evening.

RONNY COX / comedy troupe The Wahooligans open

Crossroads Coffeehouse & Music Co. - Doors open 7 PM / Music at 7:30 PM

216 N. Main Street
Winnsboro TX 75494
USA 903.342.1854 or 888.342.1854
Price: $15 adv / $18 door / $20 reserve

NOTE: Students 18 & under admitted half price!

RONNY COX is an accomplished performing songwriter, who also has more than his claim to fame as an award-winning Hollywood actor.

HERE'S A BLURB FROM RONNY'S WEB SITE: "In Hollywood, they say it takes smart actors to play stupid characters, and nice guys to play nasty villains.

In his latest album "How I Love Them Old Songs," as well as "At The Sebastiani," "Ronny Cox Live," "Cowboy Savant" and "Acoustic Eclectricity," Ronny Cox showcases a wonderful acoustic mix of folk, western, jazzy-bluesy and just plain corn ball stuff.

If you've never had the pleasure of catching Ronny on the Crossroads stage, please treat yourself and join us on this very special evening. Visit Ronny's official web site by clicking on his name above. Or go directly to Ronny's music myspace where you can hear his music right away:
http://www.myspace.com/ronnycox

And WHAT exactly are WAHOOLIGANS?! What happens when you put the comedy of vaudeville, a circus barker, and a banjo ukulele in a blender and hit frappe? You get the Wahooligans -- a fun-filled trio consisting of Dirje Smith (banjo ukulele and cello), John Smith (rub board, horns and whistles) and David Hendley (guitar) singing original, vaudeville-style songs, and breathing life into 30s and 40s standards such as "Wahoo" by the Hoosier Hotshots, and "Calamity Jane" by Al Dexter. Skits, funny songs, and costumes tranform an everyday evening into fun for the whole family.

We're delighted to present this special opening treat for Ronny on this night!

BETTYSOO BIO...
Change is good. Sometimes, you just need a little shake-up to get things to how they always ought to have been. With Heat Sin Water Skin, BettySoo adds some welcome edge and grit to the heartbreaker ballads and bell-pure vocals she's come to be known for.

Teamed with seasoned producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier, Slaid Cleaves), BettySoo has made a record worth sitting up and paying attention to. Her vocals are striking, the players strong, the sound gripping, and the lyrics compelling.

Her first studio efforts (Let Me Love You, 2005; Little Tiny Secrets, 2007, Never the Pretty Girl EP, 2007) were well received by critics, earning praise locally and nationally - even securing her performance opportunities overseas. And she’s not slowing down any time soon. Since their release, she has earned multiple songwriting awards (including Kerrville New Folk, Wildflower Festival, and Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of the Year) and has proven herself a strong emerging live performer.

Joining her on Heat Sin Water Skin are Todd Wilson on organ, Gene Elders on fiddle, and Dave Terry on drums. BettySoo and Gurf handled the guitar and vocal parts themselves. As for genre, she’s still nestled in the folk-rock world, but she is bringing something new to her listeners. “There’s a little gospel, some straight-ahead folk, a bit of twang, and maybe even a familiar oldie with a new twist. Be ready for a surprise.”

Then again, not much about BettySoo isn’t surprising. People are surprised just to see her take the stage. Plain-faced, petite (clocking in at exactly 5 feet), and freckly, people don’t have any idea what to expect – they certainly don’t expect such a large voice and moving songs. “I guess Asian-American singer-songwriters aren’t that common,” she comments, “at least, not in Texas.”

And, of course, there’s the whole issue of her name. How did a second-generation Korean end up with such a classic southern name? Is it a stage name? “No,” she answers, laughing, “I guess I’m just lucky that way. It’s right there on my birth certificate. Soo is my dad’s middle name, too. Yep, he’s a boy named Soo.”

We welcome back young BRIN BEAVER from Emory this evening to open for BettySoo. You can hear Brin's original songs online at http://www.myspace.com/brinbeaver

In the green and growing spirit of May Day, we will have a MONEY TREE for Kate's college fund. In August, Kate will be a freshman at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, on a guitar scholarship. She won't be informed as to the amount of the scholarship award until midsummer, so she's saving all she can in the meantime!

HERE ARE SOME CHOICE PRESS QUOTES FROM SUSAN'S WEB SITE...Susan Gibson's "Wide Open Spaces" was a massive hit for the Dixie Chicks and her platinum calling card to fame. Last year's Outer Space re-established the Austin area resident in the ranks of popular singer-songwriters and reaffirmed her determined direction down heartfelt highways. ~ Margaret Moser, Austin Chronicle

"...singer Susan Gibson’s growl grabs you in a headlock and doesn’t let go ... She has the intensity of steel-lunged belters such as Joan Osborne or Beth Hart, although, unlike them, she keeps her voice firmly tethered to the song..." ~ Marc Rigrodsky, SoundStage! Magazine

"...Ms. Gibson...possesses clear, crisp, bold pipes. Her vocals have a rough edge that is tempered by a potent sense of melody. When she sings, you can see her body surge with energy. She's pulsating with every word." ~ Mario Tarradell, Dallas Morning News

ABOUT THE QUEBE SISTERS... When Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced kway-bee) take to a stage, audiences marvel. When they raise their fiddles to play and sing their vintage-style three-part harmony, audiences are blown away. Add the rhythm guitar of Joey McKenzie (3-time World Champion fiddler!) and the upright bass of Drew Phelps, and the Quebe Sisters Band becomes a force of nature.

Whether it’s a Western swing classic a la Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, a swing standard (Benny Goodman), vintage country shuffle (Ray Price), or Western anthem that would do Sons of the Pioneers proud -- the band is phenomenal. The house comes down, too, when the QSB launches into bluegrass or a traditional, Texas old-time fiddle breakdown.

Reaction is the same wherever the Fort Worth-based group goes. And this group has been around -- from concert halls and festivals, to cowboy gatherings and rodeos across North America, as well as The Kennedy Center, the Grand Ole Opry, and NYC’s Lincoln Center. Concerts from Canada to California, and Austin to Boston, to Bangor, Maine, include shows with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard, Marty Stuart, Riders in the Sky, and The Reno Philharmonic.

Investor Warren Buffet was so impressed by the band’s rendition of “Red River Valley” at a Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting that he was moved to sit in with a ukulele and sing along. (See the video at their youtube channel!). Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett said the band's “blend of swing with a dash of contemporary color … so unique in today’s music world” and its “cannonball of stage presence … stopped me in my tracks … Man, can they play.”

QSB — recently tagged Group of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists, and named winner of the Crescendo Award by the Western Music Association, is in the midst of an extensive tour behind its debut album, TIMELESS (FiddleTone Records), with dates scheduled from Texas to Canada and Washington to Tennessee through the end of the year.
